Pap Test 101

What is a Pap test?
Papanicolaou test  also called pap smear, is a sample of the cells taken from a woman's cervix. A sample of cervical cells is taken from the cervix to check for cervical cancer or tumors that can lead to cervical cancer. This is the best way to detect cancerous cells and if detected early, cervical cancer can be cured with medical treatment. A woman should be tested beginning at age 21 (even if she has already had sex OR not) and it is recommended to get tested every 2 years. A pap test is not painful but can be uncomfortable.

How is a Pap test taken?
A doctor uses a device to widen the vagina opening and with a small brush collects cells from the cervix. The cells are taken to a lab to be examined and it takes a few weeks to get the results.
